stupid research.

all my life i have embraced the fact that i am opposite handed from 90% of the world. it's fun telling people and having them act like they are meeting their favorite movie star! (ok maybe not quite that exaggerrated but still...)

i've always had special scissors and a cool softball glove that no one else can wear. i've always been able to surprise the other teams with my left footed kick. i always get to sit at the cool left-handers desk. (and oh boy do i hate when people take that desk.)

but this week it's not as cool as it used to be. this week i learned that being left handed truly isn't as cool as everyone makes it seem...

quoted directly from my developmental psychology textbook,

"left-handedness occurs more frequently among severely retarded and mentally ill people than in the general population . . . early damage to the left hemisphere may have caused their (left handers) disabilities while also leading to a shift in handedness . . . left handedness is associated with prenatal and birth difficulties that can result in brain damage . . . the brain of left-handers tend to be less strongly lateralized than those of right-handers."

dear author, did you forget that although left handers are retarded, slower, and less lateralized, they still know how to read??

thank you for reminding me how special i truly am.

next time you see me i may just be faking right handedness.

  1. Oh Kaitlyn, I must say that this did bring a smile to my face, and I may or may not have laughed to myself :) I love you, left-handedness and all.
